Introduction

With laptops being made so common in homes, there was an inevitable need for suitable peripherals that elevated the functionality of these laptops as well. A lot of the work on laptops was hard to get done just by using the touchpad provided. A solution was to bring the wired mice used with desktop computers and turn its head into a USB port, so it could be plugged in the laptops as well.

Logitech Marathon Mouse M705

This was embraced by users for quite some time, until they started realizing the inconvenience of having to deal with another wire on top of their chargers and headphones and whatnot. This regular inserting and unplugging of the mice also led to the damaging of its wires, which just added to the frustration.

Laptops are much more convenient than regular computers and are portable for everyday usage. Even though desktop computers offer you much more power and customizability, laptops don’t just eliminate the need of wires, they offer even more ease-of-use with compatible wireless input devices that make your life a lot easier.

Enter: Logitech.

Logitech has been one of the leading companies in making computer peripherals for over a decade now. As people understood the difficulties they faced with their mice, Logitech understood it as well and decided to introduce the wireless mouse. Now, about every laptop user has a wireless mouse alongside to help with their daily tasks with ease.

The dongle that comes along the mouse sticks inside your laptop’s USB port and is made compact so you can leave it there the whole time without removing it after every use. With their long line of great wireless devices, Logitech also introduced another one, being the M705 Marathon Mouse.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Mouse

However, before buying a wireless device, it’s important that you’re informed about several things to make sure your purchase is not going to waste. First off, you need to understand what you’re looking for in a wireless mouse.

It could be a long lasting battery life, or it could even be extra programmable buttons for you to (short)cut through your workload with ease. You will need to consider if you want a gaming mouse, with much more premium technology in it, or just a regular everyday use mouse with casual gaming involved.

Furthermore, just like any other product, you will need to check out reviews about the mouse to see if it is the real deal or not. Lucky for you, you’ve landed at the right spot because we have jotted down all you need to know about the Logitech M705 Marathon before you make your buy!

Logitech Marathon Mouse M705

Logitech Wireless Marathon Mouse M705 with 3-Year Battery Life (Discontinued by Manufacturer)

Logitech ticks a lot of the right boxes, almost all, with their M705 model. The M705 promises a lot of amazing features and functionality at the most reasonable price point possible. The mouse allows you immense freedom to use it as you like, providing 6 programmable buttons on top of the right and left click ones.

Three buttons reside on the thumb-rest side of the mouse, and three more are triggered when you click the mouse-wheel left, right or downwards. You can install Logitech’s proprietary software named Setpoint on your laptop to map these keys accordingly.

Logitech has also promised a 3-year battery, which is by far the longest battery ever seen in a mouse before. A lot of talk surfaced about it being a lie, but there were several users who experimented with the mouse, and claimed to have drained barely 50% of the mouse’s battery over a span of 3 years.

This sort of battery performance is monumental in the tech-world. You can plug in two AAA batteries inside, and forget that your mouse will ever need a battery change. You can also put just one battery to make the mouse lighter and it’ll still work fine.

The M705 comes with a unifying receiver along with it in the box, which is a big deal when it comes to connectivity. Logitech’s new nano receiver eliminates any further barriers before connecting your wireless devices to your laptop, and you can experience a smooth plug-and-play experience, whether you have a Mac or Windows on your computer.

The unifying dongle also allows up to 6 compatible Logitech devices to be used with it simultaneously. So you can bring along your keyboard as well and the receiver will take care of it. It can be distinguished from the regular nano-receiver by its orange logo on the plastic part.

To aid with your daily heavy usage, the M705 Marathon Mouse is intricately built to fit snugly in your hand. The ergonomics of the mouse have been well-built to sit nicely in your palms, so you can use it for hours without having your fingers cramped up after your work. However, the mouse may not provide as much comfort to people with big hands, due to its compact size. In addition to that, left-handed users don’t have anything to gain from this model, as it’s designed specifically for right-handed use.

Pros

  • One of the longest-lasting batteries in a mouse
  • Great ergonomics
  • Has a unifying receiver included in the box
  • 6 programmable buttons for ease-of-use
  • Priced very reasonably

Cons

  • Not built for left-handed users
  • People with large hand might get a little uncomfortable

Verdict

Overall, Logitech has done an amazing job with the M705 Marathon Mouse. Great build, extra functionality, smooth gliding on almost every surface, and the best battery performance we’ve seen; it all certainly deserves praise. It’s difficult to find such a high-performance mouse with top-notch all-round features at a very cheap price

To take things in perspective, Logitech sells its unifying receiver on its website separately for about 10 USD, and it’s provided in the box with the M705. So as long as you’re a right-handed person, and aren’t a basketball athlete, you shouldn’t miss out on this!

Alternatives

Now as great of a mouse the M705 is, there still are different options you can choose from depending on some factors like how much you want to spend. We’ve listed a few of them.

Logitech G Pro Wireless

Logitech G PRO Wireless Gaming Mouse, Hero 16K Sensor, 16,000 DPI, RGB, Ultra Lightweight, 4 to 8 Programmable Buttons, Long Battery Life, On-Board Memory, Built for Esport, PC / Mac - Black

The G Pro is built to be used for gaming purposes. The mouse has a much wider range of DPI as compared to other top gaming mice in the market, specifically from 100 DPI to 16,000. Logitech also boasts about its LightSpeed wireless technology, with only a 1ms difference in latency. That, on paper, seems other-worldly.

The G Pro has a nice sleek design, unlike most gaming mice which usually have an aggressive take on the build, and also houses an RGB light that radiates through the ‘G’ logo. It also is usable for left-handed people, thanks to its ambidextrous approach to the design.

Users have claimed it to be the fastest and smoothest phone available, and to no dissent too. The G Pro manages to claim that title thanks to its HERO(High Efficiency Rated Optical) sensors, paired with the LightSpeed system as well.

All this is maintained well by Logitech, as it offers about 60 hours of battery use, being almost double than its competitors in the market. This is one of the best mice out there if you have the money to get it.

Logitech MX Master 2S

Logitech MX Master 2S Wireless Mouse – Use on Any Surface, Hyper-Fast Scrolling, Ergonomic Shape, Rechargeable, Control Upto 3 Apple Mac and Windows Computers, Graphite (Discontinued by Manufacturer)

The MX Master 2S is Logitech’s best selling mouse of all time, and it’s no surprise considering the features it provides. Apart from it being feature-packed, the name is so appealing that you could buy the mouse just to tell all your friends about it.

The MX Master 2S comes with plenty of additional buttons that you can program to your liking. It also houses a horizontal wheel around the thumb-rest.

In addition to that, the model makes use of Logitech’s ‘Flow’ technology, which allows it to be used on different unifying receivers on different computers with the touch of a button. It also consists of a ‘Darkfield’ technology, which is a term for the elevated tracking system, so you can use the mouse on literally any surface and it’ll work just fine. Apart from not supporting an ambidextrous design, this mouse ticks all boxes.

Logitech MX Anywhere 2

Logitech MX Anywhere 2 Wireless Mouse – Use On Any Surface, Hyper-Fast Scrolling, Rechargeable, for Apple Mac or Microsoft Windows Computers and laptops, Meteorite

At half its price point, the MX Anywhere 2 is just a slightly less feature-packed, ambidextrous version of the MX Master 2S. You won’t find as many buttons on this as you would on the latter, nor are the ergonomics quite as good, but it does look minimalistic and supports left-handed use as well. It also boards the ‘Darkfield’ technology, and has a unifying receiver in the box with it. For its price, it’s a bang for your buck.

Conclusion

Logitech has hit the ball out of the park with the M705. It has everything good that a mouse should have. However, if you could manage to spend more on a wireless mouse, then our suggestion would be to get the MX Anywhere 2 instead, without taking anything away from the M705.
