2020 is already shaping up to be one of the biggest years in modern history when it comes to videogames.
AAA studios are unveiling a host of blockbuster titles that have been long anticipated, and both Sony and Microsoft have independently confirmed that the next generation of videogame consoles is going to be launched during the holiday season of 2020.
And while the promise of new hardware (and some great new games) is always a big deal for serious gamers like me, nothing – and I mean NOTHING – has me as excited for video gaming in 2020 than the launch of Marvel Realm of Champions!
I was lucky enough to catch the Facebook Live unveiling of the game that Marvel hosted during the New York City Comic Con earlier this year and ever since that quick teaser I’ve been counting down the days to launch.
Sure, couple of other cool games are set to drop next year (especially some of the launch titles expected for those new consuls we highlighted above). But the real star of the show is going to be this new game from the folks at Marvel.
What We Know So Far
The FB Live stream provided us all with quite a bit of information about this new game, especially the fact that it is going to be a direct sequel to Marvel Contest of Champions – one of the best Marvel mobile video games ever released.
The whole concept behind this new title, though, is going to be built on top of a brand-new reimagining of the Marvel Universe and that’s where things get really exciting.
Giving players an opportunity to explore Battleworld in this new Marvel Universe, players are going to be able to play through some of the most popular storylines from the Secret Wars, it book series that started in 1984 – one of the most popular Marvel comic book series of all time.
As we expected, there wasn’t any gameplay from the folks at Kabam and Netmarble (the developers behind this new game) but we definitely got a sneak peek at some of the characters that we are going to be able to throw down with as soon as this game officially launches.
Confirmed so far are:
- Iron Man
- Thor
- Dr. Strange
- Spiderman
- Black Panther
… And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
On top of that, leaks have started to spring up showing that we are going to be able to align ourselves with different “Houses” in the Marvel universe.
These different factions are going to be led by legendary characters – including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, and the X-Men – and that means there’s potential for new characters to be added all the time to this game after it launches to open up some really fun and exciting storylines and tweaks to combat.
Also, can we take just a second here to realize just how cool it’s going to be to FINALLY get everyone from the Marvel universe on our mobile devices at the same time?
Just think about how cool it’s going to be to be seeing players using Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Wolverine on-screen – and in action – all at the same time.
It’s going to be nuts!
We should also remember that the really cool thing about this is that all of these fan favorite characters have been tweaked and twisted a little bit thanks to the reimagining of this new Marvel Universe.
The potential for these characters to really embrace something new, something different, and something that feels like it belongs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but at the same time stands apart all on its own is what has a lot of gamers (myself included) really pumped up!
We also know direct from the developers that this game is going to be half RPG and half PVE/PVP with players having an opportunity to explore this new universe with other players all over the world directly from their mobile devices.
A whole host of brand-new Marvel themed maps are already being teased (we expect more news to be launched in the early stages of 2020) and rumors state that you’re going to be able to use the special abilities of your Marvel character to not only do damage against your opponents but to do environmental damage that will change the strategies necessary for victory during the combat as well!
The first Marvel Contest of Champions was a smash success hit when it was unveiled. The odds are pretty good that this “equal without really being a sequel” – Marvel Realm of Champions – is going to be even bigger, even better, and even more exciting!
I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to grab this game (the developers have confirmed it is going to be available on launch day for both Android and iOS devices) and dive right into everything this new Marvel Universe has to offer.
